Chamber Concert Three: The Light and the Dark

Saturday, May 21, 2011 - 7:30 p.m.
Christ Episcopal Church

Columbia Orchestra Piano Trio

Pieces

Maurice Ravel - Sonata for Violin, Op. posth.
Robert Schumann - Piano Quintet, Op. 44
Dmitri Shostakovich - Cello Sonata, Op. 40

About the Concert

The enchanting lyricism of Ravel's First Violin Sonata -- discovered long after his death -- opens a program whose emotions range from the tragic to the ebullient! Written shortly before the Fifth Symphony, Shostakovich's Cello Sonata explores dark, intense terrains alongside whimsical dancing in this virtuosic masterpiece. Finally, orchestra members Paul Li, violin, and Robin Strempek, viola, join the Columbia Orchestra Piano Trio – Concertmaster Brenda Anna, violin, Music Director Jason Love, cello, and orchestra pianist Nancy Smith – for one of the great chamber works of all time, Schumann's Piano Quintet.

This performance will last approximately one-and-a-half hours with one 15-minute intermission. Free admission; donations accepted.
